With the US-1 Championship firmly in hand, all there was left to do was win the SBI World Championships. In the second race, going into the first turn, 3 boats were racing side by side and the Reliable cat took the turn too hard and rolled over their cat for the 3rd time this year. After that Tony Marcantonio and Mark Kowalski led the whole race.
But they were having trouble with the setup on the boat. The boat was not airing out properly and was running too much on the nose. They had been taking it relatively easy and actually gave the win away to the BTM cat accidentally on the last lap!
"It was my mistake, I don't know where I was, maybe la-la land or something. I am usually a lot tighter on the course but I took the last buoy wide and the BTM cat came under us. It came down to a deck to deck drag race down the final stretch and they beat us by a boat length."- recalled Tony after the race.
The slight mistake forced them into a position where they had to finish ahead of the BTM cat to win the Championship. Early morning race day, Mark poured over his setup sheets and found the error on the cat. They made a setup change to the cat, went out and tested, and found another 3 mph and 5 sec on acceleration! They were ready for the race!
From the drop of the green flag, the JD Byrider cat took off!
After the test we knew we were back to where we wanted to be. We put some different props on for the race and in the race it was a rocket ship! I asked the helicopter were the field was and they couldn't see them! The rest of the cats were not even close! And we beat Billy Mauf in all 3 races!"- exclaimed the jubilant World Champ!
We congratulate Mark and Tony and their first National and World Championships! Though their determination and hard work Weismann Marine is back on top!
