Dave Kutcher and Todd Petersen out drove, out handled, and out accelerated the whole field of boats competing head to head at the 29th annual Bay Fair in Mission Bay San Diego in all four races over the weekend.
With half the horsepower of the big cats, the Advanced Vessel Research vee called "Shifts Happen" looked very impressive, breaking away from the field, entering the turns at 97 mph! and carving through the turns, hugging the bouys, before accelerating down the long chutes.
Even on a 2 1/2 mile course, the big cats, In The Red and Renegade, had trouble getting up to speed to as the low and sleek AVR Vee squirted away on the straight aways. By the end of straights, the Renegade cat would eventually catch them, but then had to take the long way round just to stay on plane, and the cats lose alot of speed around the long turns(high cg boats don't turn so well!).
In the final race, they had the field covered by almost a full straight away lead with 3 laps to go when the officials called a competition yellow and put the slower boats on the inside.
Luckly for In the Red, they were put inside of Dave and Todd and were able to hold them off with some questionable driving tactics. Dave and Todd tried down the inside and around the outsides of the In the Red cat, but got chopped off everytime allowing Renegade to move into second place.
Dave and Todd decide against risking their lives to beat them, and ran right behind the dueling cats to the checkered flag. Renegade edged out In the Red by a foot, and AVR was less than a rooster tail behind them, closing on the inside.
