CLASS 2

Lake Como, Italy (December, 10th)

WORLD SPEED RECORD

Jann Hillestad and Andreas Ugland got back in their Buzzi Tri-maran refitted with our unique Semi-Automatic 2 Speed and the latest spec Seatek Diesel engine. They shattered the World Record by more than 20mph (40kph) clocking in a top speed of 136mph (219kph) over the measured kilometer.

"The transmission is perfect. It's bullet-proof!" exclaimed team manager Jan Zaborowski when asked how did the gearbox look inside?

CLASS 1

In a complete reversal of rule changes for next year, the governing bodies of Class I World Offshore ( U.I.M. and I.O.T.A. ) are now talking about banning only transmissions in 2001 and both Lamborghini and Seatek are to allowed to compete as the only engine manufacturers. Also out is the decision to adopt the APBA Super Cat rules and the big block chevys.

This decision affects 4 transmission manufacturers.

Traction Products Inc., Lamborghini, Metau and Colotti.

Since we introduced multi-speed transmissions over 10 years ago, only Lamborghini and ourselves have won a race in Class 1 and Class 2!

What about the other two?

Three years ago, they saw us create the first 3 speed diesel transmission for the Bilboa cat, and they must have said to themselves, "If they could do it, so can we !"

Instead of coming up with something different, they got a good look at our gearbox (without our permission) , and they both copied our transmission layout! Of course, they "improved it" by making it nearly twice as big and twice as heavy!!

What was wrong with the first layout was we didn't get that blank piece of paper in the beginning -to get the whole concept right. We were forced to prove our idea in the existing boat configuration.

That turned out to be more of a handycap than we had anticipated. We all agreed it was going to be development year, but nobody expected us to be the fastest offshore boat in the world right from the first test!

And fast we were, and Bilboa qualified on the Pole for every race and led every race easily!

In testing, the boat never had a failure. It worked great. But in race conditions, we lost every race while way out front!

Those Seatek diesel engines wore out teeth, fatigued bearings, fried computers, burnt down turbos, and even broke the boat! There was one were race were the boat didn't break and the driver spun the race away! Twice!!

But we never lost a transmission and all four are still in working condition. That's why they copied the layout, it seemed perfectly fine to them, it was just too fragile.

Curiously, the engine dampers never needed to be changed during the whole racing season and the limited testing we did!

It was about now that Metau appeared on the Offshore scene and convinced our team to switch away from us to them for the 1999 season. Confident that they would do better than us, they agreed to supply them to Bilboa for free!

Impressed by our success in our rookie season, the Arabic Victory Team and the Norwegian Ugland Team made us a deal we couldn't refuse.

We were given permission by both teams to use a blank piece of paper!

And in three months Pat and Chris Weismann went to work and produced an all new Diesel engine/ Drop Box/ 4 Speed Semi-Automatic design, and Victory and Ugland both found boats to cut up to fit our new package!

We also had created the first 6 Speed transmission for the teams that chose to run the Lamborghini engines.

We completed the Ugland boat at the first race in the pits on the Friday before the race in Savona, Italy! And the Victory Team weren't able to finish their new boat in time for the first two races.

That still didn't stop the Victory Team from coming in late into the season and utterly dominating it, becoming the first Triple Crown Winner ever by winning the 1999 Class 1 World, European, and Pole Position Championships!

. . . and we still had a race to go!

Colotti came out with their 4 speed for the Nicolini/Thorne diesel boat and suffered from transmission failures in practically every race. The Metau transmission fared a little better, and the Bilboa cat was never as fast as it was and they never won a Pole or a race. The only difference from the year before was the transmission.

None of the Lamborghini engine owners switched to our 6 speeds largely due to Lamborghini announcing that they were going to supply 6 speeds for everyone.

This year, the Victory Team built a brand new boat to utilize our package to the limit with new, more powerful engines from Seatek. We didn't make one design change!

Ugland modified their boat further to accept the design we did for Victory as it was better overall.

Both Bilboa and Nicolini/Thorne chose to remain with their same packages.

Again the Lamborghini customers didn't purchase our 6 speeds. Instead they chose to continue with the Lamborghini 6 speeds. The 1997 World Champion Jolly Motor, the 1998 World Champion Spirit of Norway, and the Victory 7 cat all suffered repeated transmission failures throughout the entire season.

Bilboa went slower this year, never led, and failed out of numerous races; a few of them due to transmission failures!

"What you get for nothing, is worth nothing!" ( one of Pete's Laws)

Nicolini/Thorne had to quit racing mid-season this year because of all their transmission failures! Unfortunately for them, in their last race, their boat broke in half

In 9 races, Victory 1 earned 7 Poles, a record 6 wins, and won the Triple Championship Crown again!

In the 3 races where they didn't win, they led easily until turbo failures forced them to retire in two races, and a software problem caused one transmission to remain in gear (on the last lap), slowing them down back to 3rd place.

But for the second straight year with the Victory Team, we had no transmission failures!

Team Ugland in the Jotun cat finished 6th in the championship with a 5 year old boat, ahead of Bilboa and Nicolini/Thorne in the Championship.

We have worked hard with our clients to bring a cost effective alternative to the outrageously, expensive Lamborghini package into the sport of Class 1 Offshore. The Seatek engine alone costs less brand new than a single rebuild of a Lamborghini engine!

So, in an effort to curb escallating costs, improve racing, and to get more boats to the finish, the powers-at-be think the solution is to ban multi-speed transmissions -for one year!

All the teams spend whatever money they can spend to win the Championship. And Class 1 and sponsors don't pay them back anything close to what they put in.

So, why do they spend money?

To win!

Now, imagine racing around a racetrack in a Lamborghini Diablo or a Diesel Truck, but only being able to use high gear.

How well are those 10,000 lb boats going to run with high-revving, narrow torque band engines ? What about with slow-revving, wide torque band engines? What about racing against each other on a tight track? Are they going to change the tracks to ovals?

Anybody that has raced the Indy 500 will tell you that getting an engine to last the full 500 miles it the toughest job. The engine is running at full throttle for most of the race.

If the transmissions are banned, there will be more engine failures because the throttlemen will have to use more throttle to get and keep the boats moving. They will have to carry more speed through the turns just to keep the boat on plane and it's not only unsafe, the increased cornering load breaks off rudders and prop blades!

One big advantage to have transmissions is if you lose a motor on one side, you can still get the boat on plane with the other transmission and finish the race!

You have to race as hard in order to win and there can only be one winner. There will always be failures in racing. It's how we learn something new!

There has to be freedom to create technologies if we are to move forward and challenge again. Banning transmissions does nothing to help the sport as a whole, and everything to hurt it!

NMRA/Prostar Finals

Palmdale, Ca. (Nov. 25th)

Pete Steuri beat this year's champion Scott Valentine to win the final round in NMRA Funny Bike Finals!

Pete purchased our 4th KZ3 transmission 4 years ago and he hasn't bought a spare part yet!

CLASS 1

There has been no official word on the rules for next year. At this time, both Lamborghini and Seatek have filed lawsuits against the U.I.M. for restriction of trade.

The U.I.M. are now thinking combining the APBA series rules and allowing the Lamborghini and Seatek engines, but no Transmissions!!

Do we have to threaten to file lawsuits just to be able to race in a series that we have invested a lot of our time and money in !?!

AMA/Prostar World Finals

Gainsville, Fl. (Nov. 21th)

With 3 out of 4 bikes going into the semi-finals, the odds were in our favor that we would come away with a win. But unfortunately, we didn't! Former champion Gary Clark rose to the occasion and beat Keith Lynn in the Final Round to win, Bryan Bennett finished 3rd, and Chip Ellis was 4th.

In what was Keith Lynn's third race with our KZ3, the new bike set the #2 time in qualifying, a career best time for Keith with a 6.76s run!

Chip Ellis had a blistering run of a 6.73s while oiling the track the whole way down! A failed starter and no backup took them out of the semi-final round!

Chip still finished an incredible 3rd place in the Championship in his rookie season in Funny Bike!

Steve Suter was ready again to break all the records, but their engine kept breaking instead! This bike has arguably the most powerful in the funny bike field, and one of the most fragile! Yes, that's an intercooler!

1999 AMA/Prostar and 2000 IDBA Champ Bryan Bennett had a hell of a time trying to keep his bike flying straight in the Finals! He has his right foot down and he's leaning hard to the left in a huge effort to keep his bike straight and it hasn't moved a foot!

Bryan's 3rd place was good enough to maintain 2nd place in the Championship!

Two years, two Championships, one KZ3 transmission!

Super Cat World Finals

St. Petersburg, Florida (Nov 17-20th)

In what should have been back to back wins in the World Super Cat Finals, the awesome Tommy Bahama Cat ruled the seas until suffering two frustrating failures right at the finish in both races!

In the first race, Paul and Mark Nemschoff left everybody behind from the drop of the green flag. Through the first buoy with a 10 second lead, they smoked the Super Cat field on the very first lap by opening a 30 second lead. After two laps they settled in with a 48 second lead and were cruising to a win when the new cat broke!

In the second race, they were washed down at the start when another cat moved across their bow and the rooster tail of water ran right into the engine intake and bogged down the engines.

From the back of the pack, they passed the entire field around the outside of the turns and down the straight-aways! But with just a few laps to go, the boat suffered yet another failure ending their chances for victory.

"The whole crowd was lined up along the seaboard cheering on the boat as it went through the field. When it fell out, everybody just left! It was awesome while it lasted!", exclaimed Pat Weismann.

This is the second boat made by Randy Scism for the new Super Cat rules. The first boat out of the mold was supposed to be the boat to beat -especially since Johnny Tomlinson was throttling!

That boat proved to be no match for the Tommy Bahama boat in the World Finals.

What was the difference between the two boats ?

The first has been running a "Mercury" set-up and the second a "Weismann" set-up!

Debuting the first boat designed for the new APBA Super Cat rules, Paul and Mark Nemschoff's have made themselves known as serious contenders for next year's Super Cat title. This is yet another boat we have heavily influenced with our technology.

In an effort to gain the best possible advantages for the boat, we have created a full range of Drop Boxes that rotate in either direction full time. This transmission (WDB-13.5) has a 13.500 offset from input to output, and is the only new product on this boat.

In the first race in Islamorda Florida, the Nemschoff's were running an incredible 3rd place when the engine electronics quit. In their second only race in Washington NC., they lead the first lap in front of DonQ before breaking down.

CLASS 1

Dubai, U.A.E. (Nov 10th)

In a crushing display of supremacy, Khalfan Harib and Ali Nasser rounded the first buoy in 1st place and never looked back to win the last race of the season in style!

Victory 1 completed the 15 lap race almost a minute and a half advantage over the second place boat and set a new record for wins in a season with 6 victories!

Andreas Ugland and Jann Hillestad finished in 4th place earning the fledgling team 5th place in the World Championship!

In what might be the last race with the Diesel Semi-Automatic 4 Speeds and Diesel engines, this win is especially important to us!

CLASS 1

Dubai, U.A.E. (Nov 9th)

With all 3 UIM Class 1 2000 Championships in their possession, Khalfan Harib and Ali Nasser showed the competitions no mercy and captured the top spot in the Time Trials for the 7th time in 9 races this year!

Since Pat and Chris Weismann first introduced Semi-Automatic Transmissions coupled with the awesome power of the Seatek Diesel Engines in Class 1, we have won 20 out of 26 Time Trials!

Andreas Ugland and Jann Hillestad had a good run to secure 6th position in the Time Trial Championship! They are cruising past the Burj Al Arab, one of the world's most expensive hotels. It's meant to look like a sail boat.

The UIM has been in serious talks regarding the future of Class 1 this week in Dubai. It seems that the UIM committee wants to ban the Diesel engines from the sport. The Lamborghini engines are also subject to go, and there is talk of adopting the new Super Cat rules made by the APBA this year. This would mean that the teams would have to make all new boats, and switch to big-block chevys! Chevy engines are readily available worldwide, they're cheaper and they sound great!

This is in effort to bring more competitors into the UIM series, mainly from the United States.

The question seems to be whether or not to allow Multi-Speed Transmissions! Since some of our competitors fall out of races mainly from their transmission failures, the situation for our Semi-Automatic Transmissions doesn't look too good!

If they do go to Super Cat rules and no Multi-Speed Transmissions, we are looking very good since have just created two new products this year to suit the rules. Our revolutionary MKII Surface Drive and our range of Billet Drop Boxes!

(Nov, 12) They are supposed to vote on the 15th of Nov. The official rumor is for 2001, Super Cat rules with no Multi-Speed Transmissions until 2002 or 2003.

Stay tuned !

CLASS 1

Marmaris, Turkey (September 10th)

Victory 1 was leading the race and cruising towards it's 2nd consecutive title when one of the engines blew!

It's now down to the two final race in October in the U.A.E. to decide the World Championship and the Pole Position Championship.

Marmaris, Turkey (September 9th)

Victory 1 extended its lead Pole Position Championship by setting the fastest time on their first and only run at 1 min .57 .64 secs!
"We had a very good first run and I was confident that it wouldn't be beaten." said Khalfan Harib. "We made the right propeller choice and although some of the other boats were faster in the straights, we made up the time with tight and fast turns." said Ali Nasser.

Harib and Nasser now have 6 wins out of 7 starts! They currently hold a 33 point lead with just 2 races to go. If they finish just 4th or higher in the one of the time trials, our 4 Speed Diesel Transmissions will be the UIM Time Trials Champion for the 3rd straight year!

And if Victory 1 finished in 4th place or better in either of the last two races , our 4 Speed Diesel Transmissions will be the UIM World Class 1 Champion for the 2nd straight year!

CLASS 1

Istanbul, Turkey (September 4th)

In one of the most dramatic races of the season, Khalfan Harib and Ali Nasser in their Weismann shifted Victory 1 demonstrated their overall superiority by winning their 3rd race in a row!

Coming back from a poor start which found them in 6th place, Victory 1 methodically sliced their way back through the pack from 6th place to 1st place!

"We made the wrong propeller choice which cost us a lot of time at the start," said Khalfan. "But as the fuel load became lighter we picked up the pace and were able to pick our way through the field. I am very pleased with this result as it keeps us well on target for all three titles."

"I have to take my hat of to Khalfan and Ali, they were in a class of their own. We pushed hard but there was no way we could catch them," said second place Al Tayer.

Jolly Motor came in 3rd. "I felt there were two races out there today, Victory 1 and the rest of us. When Victory 1 went passed us it felt like we had picked up an anchor the way they left us behind", said Kjell Rokke

Harib and Nasser now lead the World Championship by 32 points!

Victory 1 Dominate To Win Istanbul Time Trial

Khalfan Harib and Ali Nasser once again dominated in the Class 1 World Offshore Time Trial Championship producing their 5th Pole Position of the season!
The Championship leaders set an unassailable time on their
first and only run, completing the 3.43 mile course in 1 min 55.79 seconds and sat back and watched as their rivals failed to match them. "We have hardly made any changes to the boat since she is just about as perfect a boat as you can get," said a delighted Ali Nasser.

Harib and Nasser’s win takes them 28 points clear of their team mates Al Tayer and Al Marri with Jolly Motor in 3rd.

EUROPEAN CLASS 1 CHAMPIONS!

Arendal, Norway (August 27th)

A U.I.M. jury reinstated Harib and Nasser as race winners of the race in Arendal, Norway! The jury have apparently deemed disqualification as too severe a penalty for going 27 mph before the start of the race!

This result dramatically changes the World Class 1 Championship with Victory 1 now firmly back in command with 72 points.

It also gives our 4 Speed Diesel Transmission and Victory Team the European Class 1 Championship for the second straight year!

Jolly Motor is now in second with 48 points and Spirit of Norway follows with 47. Each win is worth 20 points.

CLASS 2

EUROPEAN CLASS 2 CHAMPIONS!

Coews, England (August 27th)

In the 1st of 2 races, Jann Hillestad and Steffan Rout raced the sleek Buzzi Offshore V-Bottom Boat to a resounding win in the punishing sea conditions!

Shifting all the way, our unique Semi-Automatic 2 Speed accelerated past our competition to it's first race win!

In the 2nd race, again Jann and Steffan dominated the race and were well on their way to a 2nd straight win when an engine failure ended their race.

The Norwegian duo still won the European Class 2 Championship because they outscored the rest of the racers!

We pulled our revolutionary 2 speed out of this boat that Andreas Ugland and Jann Hillestad raced in the Class 2 World Championships in New Zealand and put it into the M-91 boat for the European Championships.

This one-off prototype that now has raced 4 races with one day of testing with not one single modification or repair!

We have taken an existing ZF F-N-R Crash box for the 10.6 l diesel-powered pleasure boats, threw away all the internals, and converted the case over to house our new 2 speed. The gear on the left in over 6.5 inches in diameter! The input shaft and output coupling retain the stock design. So it bolts right in the place of the existing crash box.

POPRA

Huntington Beach, California (August 20th)

Rique Ford and Dave Thomas were way out in front, flying towards victory when disaster struck!

With a little over a lap to go and cruising in the lead at over 100 mph in the rough seas, Rique and Dave struck something floating in the water!

Whatever it was, it wedged itself between the skeg and the propeller, locked up the drive train, bent 3 blades on the prop, broke the skeg clean off, tried to run the gears through the gear case, and broke the drive shaft!

R. I. P. WSD-01

Fortunately Rique and Dave were OK, but our very 1st prototype MK II Surface Drive has raced it's last race !

It was a disappointing loss for the Ragamuffin crew because we were so close. But if we are going to lose a race, this is the way we want it to happen!

Congratulations to Honker Cut Marine!

They drove a clean race against Ragamuffin with lots of great, close passing and racing. They deserved to win this race.

BONNEVILLE SPEED WEEK

Al Teague has broken the B/Blown Fuel Streamliner World Record by more than 20 mph ! At an average speed of 381.867 mph, Al has secured his 5th World Record with our Original 4 Speed Transaxle.

Smokey Alleman and Tom Roberts have also broken into the record books on their first pass ever !

With an average speed of 167.422 mph, their F/Gas Roadster ran 3 passes, each faster than the pass before. They are already looking at next year and at the next record on the list at 190 mph.

This car is using our "Classic" 5 Speed Imsa Transmission, and this one is 15 years old. This is an early version of the "Shuttle Box" that is shown at the bottom of this page.

CLASS 1

OSLO, NORWAY

Khalfan Harib and Ali Nasser fight back with another stunning performance to WIN in Oslo!

At the Scandinavian Grand Prix in Oslo on August 6th, the Victory 1 shifted to their 2nd win and their 4th Pole Position of the season!

After winning the previous race in Arendal and then getting disqualified, Victory 1's dominance was never in doubt once it reached the first turn buoy.

"We deserved this after the dispute in Arendal," said Harib. "I said we would remain focused and go out and do the job required but I would be lying if I said we didn't want to prove something. It was important that we got a good start and once we were ahead and realized we were comfortable, we took it easy and looked after the engines."

Victory 1 stormed home at an average speed of 183.50 kmh, and moved into a tie for 1st place in the Class 1 Championship with 4 races to go.

"We've got the boat to win the title but we must keep repeating this display if we are going to be world champions this year. But for the moment, this win tastes very good indeed", said Harib.

Andreas Ugland and Jann Hillestad had a great race flying in 3rd place when they spun the Jotun cat and broke a battery on the last lap to drop them to 7th.

In a race that was marred by gearbox problems for our competitors, our 4 Speed Diesel Transmissions ran flawlessly thru the entire weekend !

AMA/PROSTAR

Current Funnybike Champion Bryan Bennett wins again in the AMA/Prostar Finals in Indianapolis !

Despite melted turbo blades, Bryan Bennett was able to respond with his second quickest run ever (a 6.692) to beat Steve Suter in the final round !

Both of these bikes run with our KZ3 gearboxes !

Steve Suter ran a stunning 6.649 in round 2 to become the fastest gas-powered Funny Bike of all time!

Steve Suter also took out Chip Ellis (running our ZX3) in a dead heat in round 1. The computer always gives the win to the left lane even though Chip had the hole-shot on Steve !

. . . and long time Orient Express customer Keith Lynn has just purchased two KZ3s for his Funny Bike !

CLASS 1

ARENDAL, NORWAY

Flying at speeds of 166 mph, averaging 210.74 kmh (130.95 mph) and winning by more 2 minutes, Harib and Nasser demolished the Class 1 field !!

But...

the race committee controversially disqualified the Victory 1 boat for being on plane in the milling area before the race.

A crushing victory for our Diesel 4 Speed Transmissions and the Victory team was stripped away and given to Spirit of Norway !

It was a decision which clearly infuriated Harib and the Victory Team chief was quick to hand in an official protest against the result.

Saeed Al Tayer said, "We would never have caught Victory 1 though - it's really in a class of its own.

. . . I thought Victory 1 took the race fair and square so if they are disqualified I will be disappointed."

Khalfan Harib and Ali Nasser win the UIM Class 1 race in Anzio, Italy on June 11th!

This is the second race of the UIM Class 1 World Championship.

Khalfan and Ali led the first six laps of the first race only to suffer a turbo failure to take them out of contention.

But they fought back in the rough 6-8 ft seas around Anzio to win a great race that saw several lead changes throughout the 14 lap race.

Andreas Ugland and Jann Hillestad survived the rough seas and battled to 5th place, but their boat was broken and Jann was receiving electrical shocks from a broken dash board!

This boat was extensively revised over the winter to utilize our latest spec 4 Speed Diesel Drop Boxes.

Having won 2 pole positions and 1 race, our 4 Speed Diesel Transmission package is once again the package to beat!

AMA/PROSTAR

Bryan Bennett wins the IDBA Funny Bike Finals at Gateway International Raceway on June 4th!

In an all Weismann KZ3 final round, Steve Suter had a quicker reaction time of .533s to Bryan's .567s. But Steve's engine started to come apart and Bryan motored past to a 7.051 e.t. @ 183.29 mph!

On May 27th in Las Vegas, Chip Ellis finally came to grips with Steve Rice's prepared ZX1100 and won his first NMRA Prostar Funny Bike final!

The finals saw Chip's ZX3 against Pete Sterui's KZ3, but unfortunately, Pete broke at the line and Chip flew down the track, clocking in a 6.817 s pass with an incredible 219.54 mph thru the lights!

Chip broke the existing AMA/Prostar Western Series records for E.T. and MPH!

Ali Nasser and Khalfan Harib win the 2000 U.I.M. Class 2 World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand on Feb. 16th!

In a 3 round Championship in the rough seas around Auckland, Victory Team's M1 won the World Championship for the 2nd year in a row by winning the first race, finishing 2nd in the second, and cruising home in 3rd in Khalfan's "...toughest race of his career."

This boat has won the last 3 U.I.M. Class 2 Championships with our Dry Sump Drives!

Ali and Khalfan qualified 3rd for the race.

Andreas Ugland and Jann Hillestad debuted Chris and Pat Weismann's revolutionary new 2 Speed Semi-Automatic Transmission on the 9th of Feb and set the 2 fastest qualifying passes without ever getting into 2nd gear! With only one hour of testing in the morning, we surprised everyone by taking an old boat, creating something new, and without modifying it, we won the Pole Position!

Unfortunately for them, this boat doesn't work in rough seas; all 3 races were in rough seas, and they were not able to topple the forces of the mighty Victory Team.

Check out www.worldsport.com and www.ragamuffinracing.com

for more race details and news about Class 2 and Class 3.

Alan Ferguson's Trans-Am Car won the 1999/2000 New Zealand Trans-Am Championship.

Andy Porterfield crushes the opposition in the SCCA Nationals Finals in Las Vegas!

On the 16th and 17th of Jan. 2000, Andy qualified on the pole for both days and won both races, flag to flag, with a 26 sec lead in the 1st and a 27 sec lead in the 2nd! !

"The transmission worked great! Shifted beautifully!"

These cars race our classic bullet-proof 5 Speed "Shuttle Box" Transmission.
